Home- Progressive Voyages Review PV083

Homme are a French band who have been in existence for two decades this however is their first album sung entirely in French which to a non native English man who failed his O level French exam this mostly incomprehensible to me. However I have a translation of the lyrics to aid me so here goes,

Abus De Pouvoiŕ (abuse of power) begins the album with a strident bass riff and some interesting guitar sounds, the song is very politically charged Homme (Man) are somewhat dissatisfied with French Life as it presently is,

Ma Vie En Thereoms follows and once again there is a strong bass presence along with some tastefully delivered guitar parts, the song is an angry comment on the elites in French society and how the see themselves as being kings and should be treated as such. The song has a mixture of light and shade in its music with good use of dynamics throughout.

Toxic Girls is next which has a very Rockabilly sound to it like something from Stray cats or that sort of band would offer, it’s not a bad song at all certainly memorable enough,

Eclosion Programme (Programmed Awakening) is next this is a slower song but still with intense depth and dynamics, and a delicate unusual guitar tones which gives way for a strong solo part, a highly impressive track all told.

Ideas Noires (Dark Thoughts) follows this is largely acoustic in tone, although it has a very good guitar break halfway through.

My Captain is next and here we have some distinctive pop elements at play. Along with some harmony guitar line, it is an upbeat track with a great sound.

This is followed by Le Tunnel ( The Tunnel) which has some very Pink Floyd elements on display especially in the Dave Gilmour like guitar tones I really like how this song builds in its intensity, there is a great harmony guitar solo which grabs your attention, for je the albums best moment thus far, without a doubt.

Pile Ou Face z(Heads Or Tails) is next and this has an almost reggae back beat to it, its most effective used, I think this is a most excellent track the music is great as are the dynamics of the song, again a highly impressive track.

Le Grand Voyage ( The Great Journey concludes theca bum again we are in rock and roll territory sonically, there is another great guitar solo at the 1:52 point which impresses you, as it then slows down considerably with some atmospheric guitar line, in all I would say that the album takes a decidedly upwards trajectory after Mon Evidence after which all of the tracks are most impressive, the album ends at this point

So whilst not the best album I’ve heard this year, It certainly has moments of excellence it’s just a pity it’s all in French as I feel it loses some of its emotional depth as a result, However I am glad to have heard this for myself as there is some great music here

Homme are Christophe Massol Vocals and Bass

Arthur Grivel – Guitar

Jean Philppe Mendez – Guitar

Jacques Anoufa – Drums

The cover is interesting as is their evident frustrations
