Philoppe Kalfon - My Connection Progressive Voyages Review
In my time of having, conceivedand subsequently begun Hosting and writing for this, My own review site I have had the pleasure of working with several providers of material for review consideration. Whilst some of this is fine for me ithers have been less satisfying than others. One that has proved extremely proficiently and helpful in the rich variety of music they are involved with is Anne Claire Rallo of Bad Dog Promotions who have cultivated a diverse and healthy roster are artists,
Ranging from the well established Nick Fletcher to this gentleman Philippe Kaflon and this My connection this was kindlymoffered for consideration. This a 10 track album lasting for 39 minutes, it is primarily an album of instrumental Guitar playing although there are two songs with Vocals, these being Believe Me and Spellbound.
Writing about instrumental guitar albums is not always an easy task, as i am not technically aware enough of what makes the track sounds the way it does, Whilst I can recognise what is being played and can enjoy it I cannot tell you whether it is the Mixylodian or Phyrgian, Lydia or Dorian scale or the like this is employed in its construction.
That doesn't stop me from enjoying the album in any way One suggestion though is to listen with decent headphones on which you can clearly hear just to what degree of skill Philippe has employed in the making of this album. As there Is a wide degree and array of talent on offer here, If i were to describe this i would say that Philippe is a strong, extremely proficient and talented guitarist and that he can play in a variety of styles and tones,
Ranging from the likes of Jeff Beck, Yngwie Malmsteem, Joe Satriani, Gary Moore and the like, He has a tremendous turn of speed and expression in his playing, He also knows how to use space in his music Sweet Madness being a fine example of this where he plays a very expressive solo over some fine keyboards soundscapes from Thierry Dagincourt and is ably supported by drummer Frank Ridacker and Bassist Philippe Gonnard leaving him a fine base on which he can soar in his solo, It really makes a strong impression.,
Elsewhere on Take It Easy Philippe play againgst an almost funky rhythm as he builds his solo flight excursion, gradually until it reaches its conclusion at the tracks end.
Wandering Soul is another strong track which again includes some ryhthmic funkiness in its sound which sound really good as Philippe shreds in the closing section of the track. It is all tastefully done and carefully controlled.
The songs are both very good and each feature a different vocalst, Butcho Vokovic on Spellbound, this sound very much in the vein of a Yngwye Malmsteem song, it commences with a soaring guitar line a'la Gary Moore then moves swiftly onto harder territory, hence the Malmsteem connection.
The other vocal song Believe Me features Vocalist Valentin Boissier Decombres Fernandez (quite a name there….) This open gently with chiming guitar chords before a slightly Tuetonic sounding voice begins to sing, his voice is strong and clear though, it leaves plenty of room for Philippe to add little fils into the sound i do like this song it is a mid paced lumber of a track though the guitar solo at the end is very good though as is taken at a fast pace, most impressive all told.
Connection is a more gentle sounding track in its opening part one which utilises the space in the track to highlight Philippe's excellent expressive playing he uses a lot of Whammy bar techniques in this track with sweeps and ascending pull offs used to good effect, you are put in mind of Beck and Moore in this fine track.
Dangerous Wave uses a multi tracking effect in the guitars wisely and to fine effect, along with a muscular bass line and more chunky rhythm guitar chords Once again the solo is excellent and tastefully delivered, Philippe knows when to rein his guitar pyrotechnics in, As he does here, he shreds well but most tastefully always leaviing you wanting more, In an era when many guitarists choose to play on full stun modeall the time Philippe's restraint and tasteful approach in his playing stands out clearly making him both a very impressive artist and soloist but also one who appreciates that less is more at times.
Tbis album certainly encourages me to dig further into his other recordings and see what else he can offer listeners, in the meantime thisxalbum has definitely grown on me the more I have listened to it, mose definitely worthy of investigation I feel.
