The Imperfectionist Collective – Solitaire – Progressive Voyages Review PV 104
This album is the new release from The Imperfectionist Collective – Solitaire – Progressive Voyages Review PV 104
This album is the new release from Leo Koperdraat who was formerly involved with Fractal Mirror and The Mirror Image. What is different here though is that virtually all this apart from a few additional touches were done entirely by Leo working alone.
This means that the resulting album is imperfect, which has the effect of making the reality that it is actually a celebration of imperfection. This is important as it shows a willingness to both be vulnerable and also being able to acknowledge your flaws, not seeking to hide them away. A willingness to accept criticism even.
As I say there are a few folk who lend their support to various tracks. These include Brett Kull (Echolynn) whose vocals and baritone guitar grace this track Reincarnation as does Katie Barbato who adds her voice to the same song. Whilst Rhys Marsh’s
guitar is prevalent as are his backing vocals in the track Blue.
Let’s have a listen and see what this is all about then shall we?
The album begins with a short introductory instrumental track entitled And We’re Off which has a strong distinctive tone, which to these ears, suggests that of a Nursery Rhyme element. Especially in its opening bars before developing into an almost light classical mood with various string instruments prevalent. After a sprightly blast of drums we start the track Forgotten which is a fairly upbeat and driving track, I like the simple but effective drumbeat and the fine synthesiser lines, the chorus is strong here too, I like this song.
Waterfall is next, this has a moody opening section very 1980’s like in tone and sound textures. I like that Leo is not afraid to leave lots of space in the construction of the track, I feel this is a positive decision that adds to the effectiveness of the sound.
Blue is next and this has a very light touch to it yet even so somehow manages to possess an almost smoky jazz-tinged hue. The lyrics are most evocative and convey a real depth of meaning, suggesting a person who likes the melancholy tone that Blue evokes in him. A really great track.
Solitary Man is next and again the drums make a great impression here, there is an unusual syncopation at play here with subtle touches that help in developing the songs pace. I like the sound of this song and the understated guitar lines that is has and uses to great effect.
Conspiracy follows, again there is a very 1980’s sound to this track. The song appears to be about searching for meaning in life but always coming up short, like it is a Conspiracy to keep you in the dark. Adrift and endlessly searching. Another fine track.
I Lost The Moon is next, this again opens with a good drumbeat and develops a driving rhythm and pace. The song is a belter, the lyrics are good and there is a splendid organ type sound that lurks in the mix as well as a great jangly guitar solo part. Ttat all together sound very impressive. There is also a false ending at the conclusion again most effectively employed.
The Safety Of Silence is next, this is a very dreamy song with mellotron in the mix. The song’s lyrics are equally as dreamy, talking as they do of The Safety of Silence, not making waves and seeking a peaceful existence, another great song.
Restless Times follows and this is another great track. It is pretty much driven by the strong bass line and dancing keyboard sounds. I like the chorus here, its very effectively utilised, I also like the bass solo part which is a very unusual and yet effective section of the song.
Penultimate track is called Reincarnation, It is also the albums longest at just shy of six minutes duration. The song is about an aching for a reincarnation of a relationship to make it run in a better way and with a more positive outcome. It is quite a sad song really, as I say it seeks to be hopeful in tone but it reality seems to be very different. I still like it though, especially when Leo is joined by Brett Kull and Katie Barbato whose vocals help make this song so very good.
The album closes as it began with an outro instrumental piece of music, this is very keyboard driven although drums feature in the mix. It is a moodily evolving piece of music that works well enough but I felt it doesn’t actually head anywhere. But that’s probably just me and it certainly doesn’t detract from the great songs that this album offers the listener
