The Sunday Goose - Where My Heart Lies - Progressive Voyages Review.

I've had this album for a while now and have managed to loose it somehow so this review will have to be conducted via the Download I have in my phone.

This means I have to mess around to get the album in its correct sequence.

What I can tell you is that this album was recorded 11 years ago but only saw the light of day this year, Also that it is worth the wait as The Sunday Goose have produced an album of sheer class and quality with some sublime performances and some excellent songs.

The album consists of 12 songs plus a bonus song and the whole thing lasts for about 70 minutes in all, there are several lengthy pieces with several in the 7-8 minute length and one track of nearly 11 minutes duration.

This being Dutch prog, You know it is going to be very strong musically, with lots of keyboards and decent vocals, What you probably didn't expect is a female singer who also plays Bass and bass pedals. And she has a touch of Jon Mitchell in her jazz influenced vocal delivery. She has a gentle, and definately listenable voice which suits the material of the album very well indeed.

As opener Where My Heart Lies shows, with a graceful vocals and its jazz tinged keyboards, Even better is sunrise where Ly's Bass takes a prominent role and we can see her real talents as she holds the track together.

Time follows, Another longer track with lots of synthesisers in its opening part When then the bass kicks in a fairly upbeat manner and the song gets going, properly, It has a fine liquid guitar line that makes an impression, Especially when the solo kicks in, It sound s really solid and fine. I really like tnis albumm. had the pleasure of hearing it fully on a flight back from Lanzarote earlier this year. It certainly made the journey more pleasant for me.

The chorus of You'll Get It All In Good Time is certainly interesting and intriguing.to say the least.

This is followed by Keep The Memories which is a shorter song but one that features Ly's strong basswork once again. This girl can really play , Adding a solid bottom end to proceedings. A flanged guitar and acoustic electric guitar chords create a fine impression prior to a fine guitar solo that lifts the track up highvthe song ebds on a strong pronouncd acoustic guitar chird and whistle, .

Nostalgia is next, This is a brief piano and electric guitar piece.which leads to Oceans which begins with Market sounds, All footsteps, Conversations and Tills!

The track is a gentle slowing burn one, I like how sultry it sounds iI come across really well with a rippling piano solo halfway through That yields to organ and synthesisers, and a great guitar break from Hans Gerrittse, A simply gorgeous track, As is Out Of Focus which starts with an electric guitar line which is accentuated by Ly's bass line and the drums of Marc Lamb and the hammond organ of Bram Van Rusp. This is a very short song/track which has a great vocal from Ly and sympathetic keyboards from Bram once again, it even has time for a brief solo from Hans, this is followed by the short River Flows which is a beautiful of music mainly guitar and piano,

This is then followed by Two Hearts which opens with piano synths and a fine guitar line before Ly's Bass joins the proceedings and another jazzy style vocal begins, I like how this song sounds, it is really captivating Ly's delivery is graceful and engrossing, there is a lot occurring in the sound.

I forgot to mention the albums longest track Forever Young, at 10 :55 in length

This one begins with keyboards, lots of them before a fluid synth line plays over the top of the rhythm section of Ly and Marc's drums, the vocals then begins with electric piano playing softly In the background, the tempo increases as the guitar joins the fun, this song has a lengthy guitar solo. One for which the whole band work together to make a platform for Han's guitar to take flight from, Which he does most spectacularly.

The next track is the shorter Casting Shadows which is another guitar and piano led instrumental although Ly's Bass appears at the end.

The albums final track is My town which has a fabulous recurring guitar motif that plays throughout the track, I fel this simple guitar motif significantly adds to the strength of this track. As does the fine synthesiser solo from Bram and the strong rhythm section of Ly and Marc, The song is also strengthened by Ly's strong vocal and her repeated It's My Town which again is really effective.

It concludes what is an excellent album of fine Dutch Neo Prog, I heartily urge you to discover it for yourself and see if you agree with me.
